Prior to March 2020, Harlem Yoga Studio had two studio rooms with a full in-person schedule. When COVID hit and the world shut down, HYS had to close its physical doors and quickly pivot to offering online classes via Zoom.
The owners, Erica and Laurel, had to delay their rent payments given the immediate revenue decline as their largest revenue stream had decreased by over 50% (in-person classes). The studio was in trouble.
A&M partnered with the Harvard Business School’s small business initiative to work with Erica and Laurel on shifting their model to help gain new customers through a more data-driven, virtual class schedule, a go-forward class pricing and instructor pay strategy, simplification and improvement of their online customer marketing journey, and a lower cost structure to help HYS live through COVID and thrive once the world opened back up.
