Ritter also told me the cost of expansion has gone up considerably as everything from real estate to raw materials has become more expensive. This has delayed construction projects and in some cases made building new stores prohibitively expensive.
Acquiring competitors is increasingly looking like the more cost-effective way to expand, he said.
