A Manager’s
Perspective

Carly Shapiro is a Senior Associate with Alvarez & Marsal Consumer and Retail Group in Dallas. After interning with A&M over the summer, she is working part-time for A&M CRG while getting her MBA full-time.

A Day in the Life

Here’s an account – in Carly’s words – of a typical day working as an A&M Manager.

8:00 am

I’m an obsessive list-maker, so I always make sure that I have my to-do’s outlined and prioritized before I have my first class at 8:40…

I wake up, shower, and make some much needed coffee and breakfast. While I’m eating breakfast, I check A&M emails and assignments for school. I’m an obsessive list-maker, so I always make sure that I have my to-do’s outlined and prioritized before I have my first class at 8:40. If I find a conflict between my school-work and A&M projects, I’ll reach out to my manager to readjust timelines and set expectations.
11:00 am
After my first class of the day, I read for my classes the next day. If its Friday, I’ll hop on the weekly A&M CRG touchbase, so I can make sure I’m keeping up with any company initiatives and touchbase with the rest of the team.
2:00 pm
I’m finally done with classes for the day and am able to make myself a quick lunch while I catch up with my roommates. Then its time for A&M work! I work on the analysis or presentation for one of the workstreams I’m supporting, depending on what is needed that day. I’m involved with A&M CRG recruiting initiatives, so I may have recruiting calls with potential applicants to talk through my experience both as an intern and MBA student with CRG.
4:00 pm
After sitting at my desk all day, I definitely need to get out and get moving! I’ll head over the school gym to fit in a Peloton class.
5:00 pm
Depending on the day, I may have a club meeting or a virtual happy hour with the A&M team! If not, I will use this time to finish up assignments for classes the next day or projects for A&M.
7:00 pm
With Zoom classes and work, I try to plan dinners at friends apartments to get off-screen, out of the apartment, and decompress. I will usually head to a friend’s apartment for take-out and wine. If its Monday, it will definitely include a viewing of the Bachelorette.
10:00 pm

I check my email to make sure I’m ready for the next day…

I’ll head home and get ready for bed. I check my email to make sure I’m ready for the next day, both for school and for A&M. Then I’ll watch whatever Netflix show I’m binging until I go to sleep, hopefully not too late!
