Carly Shapiro is a Director with Alvarez & Marsal Consumer and Retail Group in Dallas. After interning with A&M over the summer and working part-time while getting her MBA, she joined full-time in August 2021.

A Day in the Life

Here’s an account – in Carly’s words – of a typical day working as an A&M Director.

6:00 am
I am definitely a morning person, so I get up early to go to Barry’s Bootcamp. My favorite ritual is grabbing a coffee and breakfast taco at the local coffee shop down the street after my class before I head home.
7:00 am

While eating my breakfast taco, I check my A&M emails and make a list of what needs to be done that day for the workstreams I’m owning.

I get home and take my dog for a walk while listening to the Daily podcast. While eating my breakfast taco, I check my A&M emails and make a list of what needs to be done that day for the workstreams I’m owning. I also look at my calendar to see what meetings I have for the day and start mapping what I need to review or discuss in each meeting.
8:30 am
I have my first Zoom meeting of the day with my team, where we go through the daily to-do’s. After the team meeting, I meet individually with the Associate on my team to get an update on any deliverables from the previous day and map out ownership for what needs to get done today.
12:30pm
After a morning of client meetings, I’ll make myself lunch or, if I have a longer break, I’ll drive to Sweetgreen to get my favorite salad. Then I’ll work on any deliverables I have for the day, whether its analyzing survey results of current customers, strategizing how to test customer messaging, or creating a deck for a readout to the CEO.
2:00 pm
I’m involved in the internal CRG Marketing team, working on publishing relevant research and opinion papers on current industry topics. We have a meeting every week with the team to discuss the progress of our current paper or new industry trends that we want to write about.
4:00 pm
I have a daily touchbase with my team at the end of the day to discuss any takeaways and next steps from meetings today, review any deliverables, and talk through what additional tasks need to be done before tomorrow. Then I’ll make sure I’ve responded to any emails I’ve received throughout the day and finish up anything that has to get done for tomorrow.
7:00 pm
My husband and I cook dinner together and catch up on our days. We then eat dinner while watching whatever show we’re currently binging.
10:30pm
I check my calendar for the next day to see what my day looks like. Then I get ready for bed, laying out my clothes for my workout in the morning, and watching TikToks until I fall asleep!
